English Study Centre

English Study Centre or usually abbreviated as ESC, is one of many student organizations in Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo. It was founded on 6 March 1998. This organization aims to gather students from all majors to learn English together and to give experience of running an organization.
Like many other organizations, ESC has an organization structure. It consists of main division and its subdivisions. The main division consists of the president of ESC, the vice president of ESC, two secretaries, and two treasurers. The subdivisions consist of Creativity Subdivision, Religion Subdivision, Academic Subdivision, Public Relationship Subdivision, Organization Development Subdivision, and EDIF Subdivision. The president’s duty is to control and maintain the stability and direction where the organization going. The duty of the vice president is to assist the president and become substitution of the president in case the president doesn’t present. The duty of the secretaries is to organize the incoming and outgoing letters. The treasurers’ duty is to organize the organization’s finance. The Creative Subdivision’s duties are planning and carrying out the programs mainly related to English, such as English Festival and Milad (Anniversary) of ESC. The Religion Subdivision’s duty is carrying out programs related to Islamic contents, such as weekly Al-Quran recitation and Mabit in Ramadhan. The Academic Subdivision’s duty is carrying out program related to English learning namely Internal Course. The Public Relationship Subdivision’s duty is maintaining the relationship between ESC and outsiders also promoting ESC through social media. The Organization Development Subdivision’s duty is carrying out programs related to the inside of ESC, such as recruitment and reorganization. The duty of EDIF Subdivision, which is stands for English Discussion Forum, is carrying out programs related to English debate, such as debating class and speaking class.
ESC has some programs carried out every year, such as English Festival, Milad of ESC, Mabit, Internal Course, and Comparative Study Visit. English Festival is a program held yearly by the Creative Subdivision which high school students from a certain region compete in many competitions like Speech Contest, Spelling Bee Competition, News Anchor Competition, etc. Milad is a program held every year around March to commemorate the anniversary of ESC. Mabit is a program by the Religion Subdivision which is held in Ramadhan every year. At Mabit, the members of ESC deepen their Islamic knowledge together in one night. Internal Course is a program by the Academic Subdivision which the members of ESC teach English to students from all majors in Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo. It is held for about eight weeks in every odd semester. Comparative Study Visit is a program by Public Relationship Subdivision. The members of ESC visit other English club of other university to learn about their club activities.
Anyone who wants to become a member of ESC has to take the open recruitment program. There are some criteria to fulfill. The applicant should be an active student of Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo. They should be a second or fourth semester student. They should be good in health, physically and mentally. They have to fill and submit the registration form. They should be loyal, honest, and responsible. They also has to do an interview held by ESC.
There are some benefit in joining ESC. You will get many knowledge related to English. You can get many friends from other majors in Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo. You can also get many experiences in running an organization. You will be able to join an organization exclusive program like PHBD.
